Ross is a chain of discount department stores that competes with T.J. Maxx and Marshalls. The first Ross store was opened in 1950 by Morris Ross in San Bruno, California. By 1982, there were six Ross locations, all of which were purchased by Mervin Morris, who founded Mervyns department stores. From there, rapid expansion occurred, and in the next three years, there were 107 stores. Ross also operates a subsidiary, called dd's Discounts; these stores have cheaper prices than traditional Ross stores, and the two stores are often found side by side. Today there are almost 1000 Ross stores, located throughout 27 states and Guam.
What to Expect When Interviewing
The majority of applicants that interview for a position at Ross report a positive interview experience. Potential employees can expect a fairly straightforward interview process consisting of a face-to-face or group interview with a store manager in which standard interview questions are posed. An example might include, "What sets you apart from other candidates?" Management positions may be required to take a personality test, be asked to submit to a drug test and participate in a group interview. Potential employees can apply online or in person, and phone interviews are sometimes conducted.
